I’m a huge sucker for Family Circus art, but the Nietzsche Family Circus is particularly inspired: “The Nietzsche Family Circus pairs a randomized Family Circus cartoon with a randomized Friedrich Nietzsche quote.”. Never before has moral relativism and perspectivism been so family-friendly.

What arouses Kal-El’s mating urge? Did kryptonian women carry some subtle mating cue at appropriate times of the year? Whatever it is, Lois Lane probably didn’t have it. We may speculate that she smells wrong, less like a kryptonian woman than like a terrestrial monkey. A mating between Superman and Lois Lane would feel like sodomy-and would be, of course, by church and common law.

I’ve met people that talk like this. Seriously, it’s awful. On a side note, Neil McAllister, the creator of this strip, is a really great guy. A while back, I asked him what comic lettering font he used for this and it turns out it was a font he made himself — then he sent it to me and I’ve been using it ever since. Thanks, Neil, you rock.

The Simpsons’ Comic Book Guy is based on a real man named T.M. Maple, a.k.a. The Mad Maple, who submitted incredibly knowledgeable and obsessive missives to the letters pages of comic books starting in the late 1970′s. A small sample of his letters can be found here.

This is simply glorious.

You know, to some extent, I miss the days of passionate but incompetent fan publication. If you look at early role-playing games, they were total labors of love, created by people without the skills to create them. The passion came through, though. Likewise, the fanzines of days past. A shitty web page just doesn’t have the “labored for hours at my kitchen table” feel.
