The most beautiful human moment of my life

June 4th, 2009

What I love about this is how human it is. The tank commander doesn’t want to just run this guy over. Don’t think of it as a man facing down a machine. Think of it as a very brave, very scared man facing a very scared kid inside a machine. That kid is making a very hard moral choice and, at least for the moment, making the best human one.

We don’t know how many people died that summer, but this man, just coming home with his groceries, stopped it from being more.

Man, I Love the Internet (part series-that-contains-itself of a series)

May 15th, 2009

Almost four years ago, I posted this Real, Actual Photo of Steve Perry. The real miracle that keeps on miracling is that people keep showing up to discover it for the first time, get in fights about what they think it is, and then lie low for another couple of months.

The picture was briefly on the front page for a Google search for “Steve Perry photo” but has since fallen deep into obscurity. Maybe you can help! Link to the article and picture in a blog post of your own. Write a whole post about it! Tell the world what you really think of the Real, Actual Photo of Steve Perry!

(Thanks to Misty for never stoppin’ believin’.)

AIG dude

So, a dude at AIG refuses to give back is $700,000 bonus and says that he’s going to give it all to “charity” (read: Heritage Foundation, Project for a New American Century, and the Republican Party).

Please note these perfectly preserved leavings of a specimen of Homo Perapluo Internetica:

I wish that all you execuative haters would get what you want. Maybe it would be a real lesson if all the top execuatives quit. This country would stop cold and they could buy up all your assets for a loaf of bread because you couldn’e even feed yourself without these 1% or less running things the rest of the country would fail quickly. Stop the class warefare and go do someting to improve you lot in life. If you’r not happy keep it to yourself. Right now we don’t need negative small minded people wipped into a frenzy by crooked lazy politicians. We need real leaders of industry to solve our problems!!!!

I love the Internet. I really do. It’s full of creative things that people have made, it’s given me some really amazing real life relationships, and it’s changed the way we all think about information and knowledge.

But none of that is in evidence below. The following is a complete response to a post about Google Voice at Wired.com.

Is it not the very perfection of an Internet post?

Rush Limbaugh Balks When He Gets What He Wanted, and Finally Some Democrats Figure Out Media

March 3rd, 2009

My hope is that the Democratic Party will use its newfound media savvy for good and not for evil.

See, they know that Rush Limbaugh is a political clown. He throws dogshit from the peanut gallery where he knows he has no responsibility, where his hypocricy is irrelevant. The Republican party, having made him an honorary member of Congress, having invited him to the White House for dinner, sees him as a rabble rouser, part of their propaganda arm but not, of course, a real politician.

But now the Obama administration is saying that Rush represents the true Republican party. The drug abuser and accuser, the racist and callow slinger of words designed to foment division between Americans, the runner up to Ann Coulter, pay attention to him. Because if you don’t agree with Rush (and not many actually do), then you’re not a real Republican.

It would be a vicious tactic, a part of a larger divide-and-conquer strategy that is being enacted on the Republicans now that they’re down, but for the fact that it’s everything they’ve ever wanted. He wanted that position. They kept giving it to him. Now they look like assholes and are backpedaling furiously to distance themselves from him.

Conservatism has proven itself to be poison and he’s standing there, trying to look innocent while trying to hide his skull and crossbones label. All the Obama administration has done is point to the label.

That’s balls.

November 29th, 2008

I just heard about this event. Apparently, someone stood up and shouted, “Tyrant! You are a tyrant!” at Attorney General Robert Mukasey while he was giving a speech last week. Mukasey fainted a little bit later into his speech.

It turns out that the guy who yelled it was a judge. That’s awesome.

I’m very proud of you, America

I Voted.

You did it right.

ask l-dopa: how do i fix my tiger server?

September 10th, 2007

Our Tiger server here was acting as the primary mail exchanger for our domain. To my knowledge, it was set up with that in mind from the get go. I’ve since moved mail service away from this server, and put it with hosted Google services.

The problem is that we still occasionally need to use it as an SMTP server, but it isn’t properly relaying mail to accounts in our domain. Instead of sending them to the proper mail exchanger (google’s), it is holding them in its own mail queue, which never goes anywhere.

How do I tell it that it is no longer the mail server for our domain? I turned off POP and IMAP service, but it keeps on coming in and never leaving.

-Tucker

Well, Tucker, it’s important to consider what the server’s done for you in the past. Take it out for coffee and tell it that you’re still friends — it can still serve web sites, it can still come over and play video games. Seriously! You want to stay friends! You mean it! But it can’t keep being the mail server. It just can’t. Things have changed and there are… other priorities now. But you can still totally be friends! See it tomorrow? Yeah? Is it cool? You’re cool. Great. Hug it.

certainty is an indication of contempt for the truth

July 11th, 2007

It’s just barely possible that you think that the administration of Bush the Younger got the short stick, that they’re just sticking up for unpopular views. But there has to be a point when you say, “No, they’re actively lying.” If you’re still under the impression that the Bush administration has the interests of the American people at heart, then I’d really like to sit you down and say, “Look, I understand. You want to believe that someone we very nearly elected could be this bad. You want to believe that there are two sides to this issue. You want to give the benefit of the doubt to someone who is in a very difficult position of leadership in a time of anexiety. But he’s a horrible man who’s done worse things to this country than Nixon, who admitted to cheating at democracy. He’s led us to war with a specious argument designed to conflate our fear of an enemy with someone who isn’t a credible threat so that he and a couple dozen friends of his can steal from the American people. He actively hates us. He wants us to fuel his slavering greed and uses the language of God to rally bigots and confuse those who peacefully follow the religion he claims to represent. If we won’t die for him, he wants us to die as an example to others.”

Pretty hyperbolic, right? Well, it turns out, the Bush administration has not only suppressed information that will stop future Katrinas, but also information that will save the lives of all those but the very rich, who have other options. The Bush regime wants us to die in pestilence and filth because it means that they’ll be able to sell us bug spray and toilet paper. I say this because the administration in its corrupt, baby-murdering wisdom has consistently suppressed so much as discussion of embryonic stem cell research while denying the clear facts that abstinence sex education is completely ineffective.

Naturally, the administration’s response to the frustrated rage of the country’s most senior doctor is to accuse him of political ineffectiveness:

White House spokesman Tony Fratto rejected Dr Carmona’s criticism, and said he was given authority to be the leading voice for the health of all Americans. “It’s disappointing to us if he failed to use his position to the fullest extent in advocating for policies he thought were in the best interests of the nation,” Mr Fratto said.

They may be the worst government this country has ever had. They’re feudalist Industrialists whose interests are in short-term profit fueled by the blood of Americans. America is, to them, a resource to be used up while they move on to other countries in their supernational corporate men-of-war. Take back your country. Vote your conscience. Make it so that electoral cheating isn’t enough. Send Cheney and Bush the jail. Let the world see that we can be a good neighbor again. Let’s apologize for voting enough votes that these horrible sociopaths could cheat the rest of the way into office. Let’s regain the strength of alliances other than those coerced. Let’s drop the Imperialist notions that cost us so much and foment hate among those who would be tense partners at worst.

a victory for humans in massachusetts

June 14th, 2007

MassEquality

Thank you, 3/4 of Massachusetts representative Legislature who voted to not eliminate civil rights to a substantial minority. Thank you for such a decisive victory showing that we’re a civilized people and that we can tolerate people who are different whether or not we like them. Thank you for showing love and support for your friends and family members. Thank you for being decent human beings and allowing people to do what they want without government interference. Thank you for voting your conscience instead of your religious affiliation. Thank you for voting your religious conviction of decency to other humans. Thank you for recognizing that people love each other and it makes us all better people to recognize that in each other. Thank you for recognizing distinction as that which makes us different, not that which makes us less.

I love you, People of Massachusetts. Wanna get married?

prison camp

For a long time, I thought Sir Alec Guinness was dead. So when I found out that he’d actually died, I was kind of surprised. Maybe you’ve had that kind of experience.

So when court today, finally, decided that it’s not OK to imprison people without charging them, trying them with evidence shown to a jury of peers, and convicting them of a crime, I thought, “Oh! That’s funny! I thought that decision was already made 200 years ago!”

“To sanction such presidential authority to order the military to seize and indefinitely detain civilians,” Judge Diana Gribbon Motz wrote, “even if the President calls them ‘enemy combatants,’ would have disastrous consequences for the Constitution — and the country.”

“We refuse to recognize a claim to power,” Judge Motz added, “that would so alter the constitutional foundations of our Republic.”

a eulogy

May 16th, 2007

Look at the size of his fat head!

Jerry Falwell
1933-2007
a eulogy

Jerry Falwell was a big man. Not big of heart, not big of mind, but a big man anyway. His corpulence could only be compared in volume to that of his homophobia, contempt of women, and capacity to ignore the core tenets of the faith he claimed to hold dear. His love of prostitutes, politics, and money put him in line with the great corruptors of society while his media outlet and university gave him access to the greatest number of hungry minds and souls. Truly, he can be considered one of the worst individuals in American society through the 20th century. If he was right, and fortunately, he wasn’t, he is now sharing Hell with J. Edgar Hoover, Alan Dulles, Joseph McCarthy, and Richard Nixon in a special place for those whose thirst for power makes them consume all around them, body, soul, and leftovers.

(Jerry Falwell’s Hit Parade, by Slate.)

Dennis Cucinich’s Balls.

Once again, it looks like only Dennis Kucinich has the balls to take on the Military Industrial Complex in any serious way. I’d love to see Dean or Gore get up behind this. Obama, I’m looking at you. I’m not expecting much from Hillary. She’s made it pretty clear that she’s about as Left a candidate as McCain.

Ford pardoned Nixon and it polluted the political landscape for decades. Let’s show these supernational purveyors of oil and blood the door and make sure they remember it.

An Epic for Our Time

Here. Try this. Do a Google search for “ifuckgod”. Here. I’ll do it for you.

What you’ve got there is a guy who, far from having one giant HTML page, is really leveraging Web2.0 to synergize his strengths.

I’m not going to bother wishing that he’d come here and paste his magnum opus into the comments here on L-Dopa, so I’ll paste them down here myself.

It’s… it’s so beautiful. It even ends in mid-sentence. It’s an absolutely flawless work, rivaling that of the great Jon Land himself.

(Thanks to frequent L-Dopa contributor Cauley for finding this.)
