grids are good
Even if you only have the most rudimentary interest in design (web or otherwise), you should read Khoi Vinh’s “Grids are Good” presentation, and especially check out the PDF. This guy’s a genius, no doubt — he breaks down his entire design process, from start to finish, and uses excellent examples throughout. Highly recommended reading.

a more formal, non-web-oriented, and somewhat less interesting treatment of grid-based design … “Grid Systems” by Kimberly Elam. This is a lovely book complete with translucent overlays (woohoo).
I think if you get called to redesign the New York Times website, and then you do a great job of doing it, you get to be called “genius”.
