greediest generation

Living as I’m living now, scraping by from paycheck to paycheck, geographically surrounded by self-congratulatory baby boomers that seem to be doing just fine, thank you very much, well, let’s just say this essay sums it up quite nicely.

An excellent piece of science fiction on this premise is Holy Fire by Bruce Sterling. In it, he posits a “Gerontocracy” that rules with both a self-supporting power structure and a paternalistic attitude toward the young. It’s a very good book. It made me want to save my money. But then I realized I didn’t have any, and that 60-year-olds had bought all the houses.

Especially interesting in light of Hillary’s recent “kids these days” remarks on young people feeling entitled…. Note to Hillary and friends: back in your day, when everything cost a nickel, you could have a twenty- (or even thirty-) something’s income and afford to buy a house or car and not live deep in credit card debt. Now? Not so much.
