ask ldopa: automated band hating
Dear ldopa,
I hate so many bands that I have trouble keeping track of them all. Is there an algorithm I can use to compute my level of hatred based just on the band’s name?
…good question, CIC. I usually use the rule of thumb where I hate any band that has any of the words “Death”, “Cab”, or “Cutie” in the name, but readers may have better ideas; please feel free to post your tips for hating bands in the comments below.

I believe that 90% of bands’ names longer than three words suck. 99% of all bands with a number in their name suck too with the exclusion of early 80’s rap acts.

Aw shucks, Jeff. Thanks for the compliment! But truth be told, I swiped, er, borrowed the CSS “rounded corner box” technique from Søren Madsen, writing for ala (http://www.alistapart.com/articles/customcorners/).
Re: the band-hating/loving issue, I’d say that any band whose name smacks of taking itself too seriously stands to fall a few notches in my esteem. Silly puns have the reverse effect. Evidence: Kathleen Turner Overdrive” (http://www.ktoverdrive.co.uk/) and the similar, but yet-to-be-formed “Jerry Springer Spaniel.”

And who can forget “Jodie Foster’s Army” from the 80’s… OK, I guess everyone forgot them.
