phpSysInfo is a nicely done, easy to install PHP interface for getting system information on hardware, network, memory, and file system utilization.

Even though their site approaches a level of bad in line with some of the worst, the software is still worth a try. There’s a sourceforge page and it’s corresponding download page.

It even comes with a set of templates, including one called “aq” that mildly resembles the most awesome desktop operating system of today.

Instructions, for anyone who might need them, to follow.

l-dopa welcomes cauley to our decreasingly exclusive order

Posted in General on February 16th, 2006 by Joshua

Apparently, Cyclops' eye beams are magnetic?

If Cauley were to be an X-Men character, he would obviously be Acidroid.

In case any of you are wondering, if I were an X-Man I’d be Captain Boomerang.

keep clean

Posted in Technology on February 16th, 2006 by Jason

The future is an inexplicably clean place - we all know that. These will help:

If you think about it, it is quite a good idea - well, eventually it will be. Cause initially, the incessant noise of having two vacuum cleaners strapped to the feet of every member of your family all the time will be, well, unpleasant.

Wonderful set of free, broken and misprinted fonts downloadable from here; the link was gleaned from this very nice list here.

i think i lose a bet

Posted in Technology on February 16th, 2006 by Joshua

Jeff and I had a wager: would OSX x86 be cracked, allowing it to be run on generic hardware before it was released, or would it take until six months after the release for the crack to come out?

Well, I’m not sure who won. It took, what, like a month and a half.

i love you and i love blondie

Debbie

As every L-Dopan knows, I love Blondie. So I was really disappointed when I found Blondie.com.

Now, what would possess someone to make a website like that? How could anyone possibly think that this could be OK in any way? I’m convinced that this website is the reason the Geneva Convention is being ignored by the US Government. Can you imagine anything worse?

brokeback reduced

Link to Kelsey Flynn’s Cliff Notes’ summary of “Brokeback Mountain”; video in Flash 8 format as per our earlier discussion. I did the music, and in case for some weird reason reason you didn’t pick up the obvious reference, the fuzzy-guitar+tremolo-surf soundtrack is a direct homage to Neil Young’s incredibly sparse and textural score for Jim Jarmusch’s 1995 western “Dead Man“.

How do you make Garfield funny? You remove his thought balloons.

reese’s

reeses

U2 gets on my nerves, and it’s no secret that aside from a song or two — tops — Elvis Costello makes me want to maim. Coldly. Chillingly. Without logic. Without calculation. Without mercy. So why would I like this song? Aside from an ill-conceived bridge section, it’s so hopelessly derivative of those I mentioned, as well as many others that come to mind that I’m lukewarm at best over (Feelies, Long Winters, etc). I’d say it was like the chocolate-and-peanut-butter-together trip, but I like those components both as much if not more so alone. That’s certainly not the case with regard to the aforementioned ingredients.

Anyway, now my sweet tooth is acting up. And with the spoils of valentines day lying about, I’m off to get a treat. So while I inch my way closer to adult onset diabetes and all of its blissful complications that will, god willing, waltz me towards renal failure and eventually throw me from this mortal coil, take a minute to listen to this song and try to figure out why it has infected me so.

Not that I think I need to, but I’ll take this time to remind you that “Because you’re a pussy” isn’t really what I’m looking for.

end-of-time products will be developed…

Posted in General on February 14th, 2006 by Jeremy

Ahhhh, daybreak. Oh — wait,
no… that would be the first big,
fiery explosion of the apocolypse.

12/21/2012: Never before in history has one date, one moment in time, been so significant to so many cultures, so many religions, so many scientists, so many governments and to so many people all around the world.

Huh. Glad I finally heard about this.

There are entire websites dedicated to this moment in time. There are blogs, discussion boards, chat rooms and scientific studies. In the not so distant future and as the date gets closer, there will be books written on the subject, feature films will be produced, “end time” religions will be formed and end of time products will be developed.

Ohhhhhh. I get it now. This guy was daydreaming in front of his computer, having big destruction fantasies in his head, and didn’t realize that he was accidentally making an entire web site dedicated to this moment in time.

Firstly, when did scientific studies start slummin’ it down on the chat room end of the relevancy spectrum? Secondly, won’t THE END OF ALL TIME sort of make products unnecessary? Ahem, aftershave? Thirdly, why didn’t I come up with the idea of cashing in on The End of Times first? I mean, this is what the Internets was created for.

tressel here. coach jim tressel.

I’m not going to pretend that I know anything whatsoever about college football, but Coach Jim Tressel’s weblog is a hoot. It’s not as much about football as much as about the man, the legend: Coach Jim Tressel himself.

hoff pepsi ads

Long ago, my friend Josh and I thought it was real, real funny to break into people’s dorm rooms and replace their desktop wallpapers with more-than-slightly-homoerotic pictures of sailors. Lots and lots of sailors.

In our defense, tequila.

Now it looks like PepsiCo. of Australia has not only embraced the high-concept of impossibly gay downloadable desktop pictures, but has also invited David Hasselhoff* along for the ride. And what a chesthair-riffic ride it is**!

* a.k.a. the “Hoff”; I’d say that David Hasselhoff has the worst celebrity website I’ve ever seen, but we all know that honor goes to — that’s right — Melanie Griffith.

** In case you were wondering what the quantifiably best picture ever taken was, it’s this one.
