microsoft’s ipod

February 25th, 2006

Is this Microsoft’s answer to the iPod? You gotta suspect that at some point they are going to have to take a stab at it. I bet it is, because just like every piece of hardware Microsoft designs*, it is remarkably ugly — styled and colored like something you’d find in a dentist’s office.

* …except for their optical mice. They make very lovely optical mice.

Actually, I believe the mice are an HP deal cross-branded with Microsoft.

Having seen the promo video, it’s a Newton. It would make me sad if this were a real thing and it wasn’t Apple doing it.

Notably, it has the same form issues that the Newtons did. Too big, too scratchable.

I have an older CASIO MPC-501, which is the revision before the MPC-701. It’s a little slow at this point, but same form factor, etc. The only problem I really see with these devices is the fucking HUGE batteries they have. I don’t see how a device is going to be able to hold a charge all day, considering battery technology is about 30 yrs behind every other technology. The Extra-Huge battery for mine last 4.5 hours one one charge.
